A breakout year from Dominic Smith (.316 average, .993 OPS), another Cy-Young caliber season from Jacob deGrom (2.38 ERA, NL-best 104 strikeouts, 0.956 WHIP) and two surprising rookie seasons from David Peterson (6-2, 3.44 ERA) and Andres Gimenez (49 games, team-high eight stolen bases) went unfulfilled. It was an agonizing result, particularly when one considers Michael Conforto’s MVP-type utility.
