Chelsea star Christian Pulisic ready to fill Eden Hazards boots after taking No10 shirt – Evening Standard

Christian Pulisic has revealed his delight after being handed the No10 jersey at Chelsea previously worn by Eden Hazard and Willian.

The 22-year-old finally claimed the coveted shirt – which he wears at international for the USA – 18 months after arriving from Borussia Dortmund.

Despite a slow start, the American enjoyed a fine first season in the Premier League having been handed the chance of replacing Eden Hazard, who wore the No10 shirt only to hand it to Willian when he left for Real Madrid.

Pulisic made a fine impression in scoring 10 times and claiming 11 assists despite an injury-hit first season – and his performances have filled the void left by Hazard.

Now the American has his hands on his favoured shirt after Willian joined Arsenal and having returned to full fitness, he hopes he can live up to his predecessor’s standards.

“It meant a lot. It’s no secret that it’s been my favourite number. It’s the number I wanted to be,” he told CBS Sports.

“Now that Willian moved on this season, there was an opportunity there. I spoke with the club and everyone felt like I was ready for it, and I felt I was ready, and it’s a number I like.

“So it was a really proud moment for me last weekend to wear it for Chelsea for the first time.

“I understand what it means and how much history it has, how many incredible players have worn it before me, but I see it as my favourite number. I just want to do well.”
